Phishing Scams!

Sempai Online has started a site that tells you where to send the phishing emails that are trying to steal your money and identity. Whether it is a "bank" asking you to confirm your details, or "paypal" needing you to take action before your account is cancelled, this site can help you make a difference in the fight against phishing. Check it out at RottenPhish.SempaiOnline.com

Kayak Competes with Google?

An article today on Forbes.com raised the possibility that Google might be vulnerable to losing search traffic to sites such as Kayak because of the natural advantage of knowing the context of a search (travel in this case). The story also mentions the SideStep merger and touches on plans to expand the Kayak Network to serve ads to other travel sites.

Kayak.com can deliver more precise results because it is customized to search for [travel]... I expect an initial public offering for Kayak, and a chance to roll up smaller companies to stitch together a large Web 3.0 venture focused on online travel.

Awesome. Just awesome.

Free Animated GIFs for Wait/Loading

Ajaxload.info has been around for a few months, and I love to build wait images here. You can specify the style, background, and foreground. Here are a few samples that took me about 2 minutes to build:

They also use a pretty cool color picker. Check it out.

Ethan's First Day of Kindergarten

Ethan started school today. It was a short day, but the class looks like it will be a good fit. He is in a K/1 class which means half the class is kindergarten and the rest are first graders.

Cherub Choir Video

I was processing photos today and found a video that I meant to post a while ago. This is a Christmas church service performance by Jason Corda and the rest of the Cherub Choir. I know it is June, but here is a little Christmas now.

Is Kayak the coolest place to work? Billo designed a new team page that is a radical departure from the old, boring, typical "meet the team" page. Check it out.

Weighty Subject, Part II

OK, the weight loss challenge is officially over. I don't yet know any results other than my own - I am hoping to find out more about how other contestants fared.

In general, I think I kicked major butt. I weighed in today (after a gluttonous weekend) at 214 pounds. I lost a total of 25 pounds since we started 2 months ago. Around the middle, I measured 5.5 inches less than my old spare tire.

I will update again if/when I find out how I stacked up against the others.

Monster Golf!

We took the kids and a friend to play Monster Golf. We had never been. It was great fun. The premise is simple; play mini golf...in the dark..with glow-in-the-dark balls...with monsters all around.

For those who know of my Halloween addiction, you will understand just how cool I thought the decor was. I can't wait to do it again - this time late at night with my fellow haunters; they are going to love it.

Weighty Subject

Wow! I weighed in for a 2-month weight loss challenge at The Thoreau Club this afternoon. I tipped the scales at a hefty 239 pounds. There looked to be about 50 other participants, so I have some serious work to do to show them what dramatic weight loss looks like.

I'll keep you posted on how this goes.

From the Mouths of Babes...

The kids and their friend, Zach, were building a gigantic play fort in the living room. To hang the nylon fabric sides, there are "C" shaped plastic rings that clamp the sides to the foam frame.

As they were building, Zach kept repeating, "We need more hookers! We need more hookers!"

From the mouths of babes...comes words to live by!

Sushi for Dessert?

Sounds gross, but if you get sushi made this way it tastes great! Rice? No, Rice Krispie treats. Fish? Yeah, Gummi fish. Soy sauce? Ummm...chocolate sauce.

Here are a couple pix from the sushi platter from a recent football Sunday gathering. Click on the picture for more detail.

Thanks to Alan and Merri for bringing these yummies.

Kayak.co.uk

Kayak launched in the UK a couple weeks ago expecting modest traffic. The site had been growing slowly until coverage on BBC2 Radio sparked a surge of interest.

I have a clip (thanks, Billo) of the segment. It's a pretty good introduction to what Kayak is all about.

Cheers, mate.

Shopping with Ethan

Ethan and I went shopping in Boston and came across this old Santa chair. It is a carved Santa with a padded lap. Santa's right arm is raised so you can nestle into him and get close to the side of his head.

We thought it was cool and funny so we got shots of each of us with my phone.

James Blunt in Las Vegas

Laurie and I went to see James Blunt's last tour date at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. It was my second time seeing him and Laurie's fourth. Neither of us had been to the Hard Rock before (though we've been to Vegas countless times). The Joint was perfect for an intimate show (about 2000 fans) and the casino was loads of fun, too.

Click the image for a few minutes of video from the show.

After the show, we played at the Hard Rock until about 2:30AM and headed back to the Venetian to go to bed. On the way, we ran into James and friends getting out of the Hard Rock SUV at the Venetian. I shook hands with him and said "James, great show tonight."

"Cheers, mate," he said and I was off. I'm sure he remembers our special moment and feels lucky to have had a couple seconds with me.

Wii Help Cat

If you want help from Wii, keep in mind that it is a gaming system first. To get help, you are going to have to work for it. Enter the "help cat." Help is available when you see the cat, but you have to catch him first - and the cat does not want to be caught.

Cabel Sasser's blog has a story about getting his new Nintendo Wii. Near the bottom of the article is his
Help Cat Video. All I can say is "wow."

Mega Mothra-beast

Alan and I encountered this large moth late one night a couple weeks ago. It was huge and didn't sweat us while we gawked and took some photos. I think it is awesome-scary!

The New KidLinkz!

KidLinkz has been completely retooled to become a social network for kids. This new site allows parents to sign up their kids for secure blogging, chats, and messaging.

Kids invite their friends to join (by handing them a printed invitation). Friends can then connect online for secure online communication.

All interaction happens within KidLinkz; think of it as a private community for young friends.

All features are logged for parental review. Dirty word filters keep things family-friendly.

There are no outside messages, so kids won't get spam.

Parents can optionally review new friends before a new link is made.

Try it out at KidLinkz
